Create Goal Momentum
Have a goal that you want to reach? not sure where to start?
First, it’s important to know a study showed that when people wrote their goals and tracked actions and progress along the way, they were able to achieve 76% of their goals – a high level of success.
But you might be thinking, “How do I do that?” One way is to use this simple technique: creating goal momentum.
To begin, take a moment and think about a goal you would like to achieve. Imagine what it would be like if you felt confident that you could reach that goal.
Step 1
Write your goal as if it’s already achieved
Why write it this way? Because when you see your goal as already achieved, your mind starts to consider ideas about how you can achieve the goal.
Example Goals
- I am feeling healthy in mind and body
- I have a job I enjoy
- I have strong, loving relationships with children/family
- I am debt-free and financially stable
- I have a nice, comfortable home
- I've completed education
Here's how this technique works using the example goal: I am feeling healthy in mind and body.
Step 2
Celebrate your small progress
Taking note of and celebrating your progress creates momentum. The key is to note small things such as a conversation, an idea, or an action. List any small step that will remind you of your progress and keep you motivated.
Example Progress
- I exercised
- I got a good night sleep
Step 3
List the ideal next step
Now that your goal and progress are listed, take a moment and ask yourself, “What’s the next ideal step for me to take today to move in the direction of my goal?”
You don’t need to list everything you will need to do to achieve the goal. Instead, just list one small thing you can do today to move you toward your goal. Doing this will feel much more doable and easier. And if you take just one small step each day, you will reach your goal in no time.
Example next steps
- Exercise before work
- Prepare a healthy meal for lunch
